The central area of the site is left unbuilt, forming a large open space with Tiny Forests that improve the microclimate and serve as fresh-air reservoirs during heatwaves. Porous structures with atria and climate wells enable cross-ventilation of all apartments, supported by an intelligent airflow system that buffers heat in winter and cools passively in summer. A three-dimensional climate skin of external sun shading and vertical planting provides shade and air circulation. Timber is the primary building material, complemented by straw insulation, loam and re:use components; the broad substitution of emission-intensive materials makes climate neutrality possible in both construction and operation, while conserving resources throughout.

Cooperation Partner: einszueins Architektur
Landscape Partner: EGKK Landschaftsarchitektur

Subsidised housing with Baugruppe & focus on full life-cycle CO₂ neutrality The “Wiener Luft” project at Vienna’s Nordwestbahnhof develops typologies that use passive air circulation and robust structures as the basis for climate-adapted living.
